The good news is that it’s possible to stay at this riad - at a price that won’t break the bank.

It can be rented room by room, or for your exclusive use.

We can liaise with riads in the vicinity to provide extra rooms for groups over 10/12 people, and are able to cater meals in-house accordingly.

THE STYLE OF THE RIAD

In 1890-91, Henri de la Martinière, on a scientific mission to Morocco, lived in a riad in the same lane. He wrote that it was white and harmonious, and devoid of the ‘mediocre and heavy ornamentation’ found in Fes.

In this spirit, master craftsmen renovated Riad Porte Royale in the classic style.

The riad has a large central courtyard, a salon, a b’hou, a loggia and five bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms.

Pure clean lines are enhanced by the traditional use of cedarwood, tadelakt (polished plaster), bejmat (unglazed terracotta), marble and handmade zellij tiles from Fes.


A HOUSE FROM 1760

Quite unusual for Marrakech, Riad Porte Royale can be dated back to 1760 or earlier and was relatively untouched.

IN "STOMACH LANE"

Riad Porte Royale is situated on Derb al Maada or Stomach Lane.

Although this might conjure up all manner of lurid images, it is in fact named after a public well that used to be at the end of this lane.

In Moroccan Arabic ‘al maada’ can also refer to a well.
